In celebration of International Girls in ICT Day 2025, Fospi Foundation joined forces with Heels and Tech , @jasminediscoverstech and Mau Creative Hub to host the “Girls Innovate Hackathon” at Government Secondary School Akim, Calabar.
This incredible event brought together over 78 bright young girls from 8 schools, inspiring them to explore the world of technology and pursue careers in ICT. From interactive tech sessions to fun group projects, the hackathon was a blend of learning, collaboration, and empowerment.
A special moment of the day was the book reading session of “Jasmine Discovers Tech”, an initiative by @jasminediscoverstech, where the girls were introduced to Jasmine’s journey of discovering the exciting world of tech. These young minds were motivated to dream big and break barriers in the digital world.
Different teams developed prototype apps in Education & E-Learning, Health & Well-being, Safety & Security, Environmental Awareness, and Community & Social Impact. Outstanding projects included a mental health tracking app, an emergency safety alert system, an eco-awareness app, and gamified STEM learning platforms. This initial phase during the hackathon taught them to understand UI/UX principles and user research, creating wireframes and interactive prototypes. This allowed them to focus on user experience, wireframing, and prototyping their app ideas applications. They girls pitched their solutions to a panel of judges and the winning team consisting of 10 girls will advance to creating functional prototypes using MIT App Inventor, demonstrating remarkable skill and creativity in 3-4 months.
